Our History
In the summer of 1953, under the leadership of H. Frank Leaman, a new congregation was formed by people of prayer and conviction who felt led to establish a new church that would break with conservative mennonite connvention while mantaining the edification of Christ. This group of people came out of the Hartman Street Mennonite and worshiped at the YMCA durring the construction or a building for Zion Mennonite Church.
In June 1956, J. Eby Leaman replaced his father as pastor and in April 1974, due to experiencing serious health problems, resigned his pastoral duties.
David Stoltzfus pastored the church from May 5, 1974 to July 1988.
Warren Tyson pastored the church from July 1988 to June 1998, He then went on to be the Conference Minister for the Atlantic Coast and Eastern District Conferences.
On April 25, 1999, Benjamin Woodring, who had been supported by the Zion Church family for 28 years as a missionary to the Dominican Republic, was installed as pastor.
Zion became a non-affiliated congreagation and became incorporated as "Zion Mennonite church of York" in April 2002. Later that year the church name was changed to "Zion Bible Church."
